Your Vehicle Inspection Checklist

Auto Mechanic

When it's time to renew your vehicle registration here in Texas, you will likely have to visit a service station. That's because you will likely have to have the car inspected to re-register it.

During an inspection, a technician will examine the car to ensure that it is still safe to drive. This will involve checking a lot of different parts of the vehicle to ensure they work properly. If they don't, you might not be able to renew your registration. Therefore, you goal should be to pass the inspection.

One way to avoid a failing inspection is to keep the car in good shape at all other times of the year. Here's are some tips on how to do so.

1. Have Car Insurance

Texas requires drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance. It helps compensate others in the event you cause damage to them. As a result, if you don't have coverage, you might face problems trying to re-register the vehicle. Keep your car insurance policy active and within the state's minimum requirements.

2. Receive Preventive Maintenance

The better you take of your vehicle, the longer it will likely last. And by maintaining the vehicle, you'll help ensure it remains in good condition when you take it for inspection. Therefore, regular tune-ups will likely keep the car in good working order when the time for inspection approaches.

Your inspection will survey major systems, such as the wheels, steering, brakes, tires and exhaust. If you begin to notice problems in these systems, seek assistance from a mechanic. Not only could you save yourself trouble during inspection, you might prevent problems from affecting the vehicle at other times.

3. Replace Small Appliances As Needed

The state inspection will check various small, but critical portions of your car. Usually, this will include items such as lights, turn signals or windshield wipers. If you notice problems on these items, you can usually find solutions at your local auto parts store. Let a technician assist you as needed. However, make sure that any replacement parts fit your vehicle and receive proper installation.

4. Don't Make Illegal Modifications

One item the state will check is a car's window tinting. If the car has inappropriate tinting, it might be in violation of the law. As a result, the car might fail inspection.

'Therefore, if you plan on making modifications to the car, make sure you don't do anything illegal. Window tinting is only one problem. Changes to the engine, steering or brake systems might put you and the car at risk during inspection.
